“MGM MACAU’s Biennial
of the Lions” Comes Roaring
to Asia for the First Time
Exhibition Celebrates
the 50-Year-Long Friendship Between China and France
As part of
MGM MACAU’s ongoing efforts to promote all forms of art and make them
accessible to the public, MGM MACAU is proud to be the exclusive sponsor of
“The Biennial of the Lions”, which features 50 different lion sculptures to
celebrate the 50th anniversary of the diplomatic relations between
China and France. This public art
initiative—organized by the Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau (IACM), the Macao
Museum of Art (MAM) and the Consulate General of France in Hong Kong and Macau,
with the support of the Macau Government Tourist Office, the Macau Cultural
Affairs Bureau (ICM) and La Biennale des Lions—is one of the highlights of the
arts festival, “Le French May”, a festive celebration of all things
French. After successful exhibitions in
Lyon, France (2004); Turin, Italy (2006); Québec, Canada (2008); and Algiers,
Algeria (2012), “The Biennial of the Lions” comes roaring to Macau for the
first time ever.
Now on its tenth
year, MGM MACAU’s Biennial of the Lions is promoting artistic cultural ties by
commissioning works of art that are exhibited in ways that link artists,
artworks and the general public in a grand spectacle. Using the lion, an icon of MGM and the emblem
of Lyon, as the symbol of this exchange, this exhibition is curated to showcase
colorful, unique pieces by 50 French and Chinese artists who have been
commissioned to use the sculptures as a blank canvas and given carte blanche to
create without boundaries. These
artists, who have been brought together in the name of culture, come from a
variety of artistic disciplines: sculpture, visual arts, textile and fashion
design.
In Europe, the
lion symbolizes strength. In China, it
represents prosperity and protection.
Visitors will be able to see for themselves how the differences—or
similarities—are depicted by two different cultures through these dazzling lion
artworks. Made from resin and with
identical poses, the finished pieces will be displayed around the city of Macau
and at MGM MACAU and its Art Space as an artistic and cultural statement that
art should be enjoyed by everyone.
Catch the lion
sculptures and the exhibition at MGM MACAU and its Art Space from June until
October. Come and see the parade of
lions—dressed elaborately by French and Chinese artists—displayed with pride
for all to admire!
